Issue Two

Fall 2022

Daniela Enciso (b. 2001) is self-taught multimedia artist from Omaha, Nebraska, who has used art as a form of therapy. After being diagnosed with depression her junior year of high school, art was her only outlet. Through personal and school projects, she has explored various mediums that have helped her thrive on her journey. Artist StatementLos Años (2022) is a portrait painting of my grandma getting diagnosed by her physician. Osteoarthritis, they called it, another diagnosis signaling my grandma was undergoing changes and aging, resulting in limitations.

Mark Gilbert (b. 1969) is an artist and researcher. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art and Art History at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Artist Statement: Luke (Child of Jennifer) (2008) depicts a birth by cesarean section. It was created as part of a two-year arts-based research study entitled “Here I Am and Nowhere Else: Portraits of Care," carried out at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE. Gilbert drew or painted one hundred portraits during the study, which used portraiture to investigate ideas about care and caregiving at the intersection of art and medicine.

Mikayla Keogh is a 2-D Studio Art major/Art History minor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a concentration in painting (& mix-media). She received her Associate’s in Arts through Metropolitan Community College. The main mediums Mikayla works in, is painting (acrylic), and mixed-media art. Keogh’s main genres are semi-realism, Psychedelic, and Pop-Art. Right now, she is working on a personal project that touches on ADHD. Artist Statement: The Covid Selfie (2020) is a portrait acrylic painting that touched on the early begging of the Covid-19 pandemic, documenting the artist’s personal environment at the time.

Shiloh King (b. 1994) is a multimedia artist from Omaha, Nebraska. She is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, working towards a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in 2-D art and a BA in Academic Art History. King's most recent works focus on various Native American social and cultural issues, as well as important Indigenous figures. Artist Statement: The 24 (2022) is an acrylic painting with impressions of King's hands representing the twenty-four reported missing and murdered Indigenous women in Omaha and a blank hand representing those unreported and those reported after the piece's making.

Alaina Mann (b. 2001) is a multimedia artist from Omaha, Nebraska. She is currently pursuing dual degrees in Biology and Studio Art through the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a minor in chemistry and a concentration in 2-D drawing and painting, expected to graduate December 2023. Mann's work is a research study on her grandmother's struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Artist Statement: Sharon Slipping (2022) is an oil painting showing the physical changes in my grandmother's facial features before and after her dementia diagnosis. 

Lizbeth Marquez (b. 2002) is a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha majoring in Psychology. Though unfamiliar with the idea of creating art, other than as a hobby, this piece was created for her medical humanities class as her final project. Artist StatementIf My Heart Spoke Too... (2022) is a photography piece depicting the journey of a mother with rheumatoid arthritis and her relationship with her two daughters. Much symbolism is found in the depiction of rheumatoid arthritis as a delicate and fragile illness and the beauty found in suffering.

Rose Werther (b. 2000) is a multimedia artist. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and is working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts through the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a concentration in 2-D media. Her recent work focuses on the intersection of humanity, nature, and time; her imagery is born from a desire for harmony between these three elements. Artist Statement: Adornment (2022) is a multimedia work on handmade paper with blackcurrant bark, a peacock feather, a found photo, and acrylic medium. It explores the connection of beautiful things and ornamentation found in nature. Dreamscape (2022) is a graphite and charcoal work. It was based on a collage combining natural elements to create fantastical imagery. It explores the connection between the natural world and mythology.
